USB DAQ 6501 distribution

Tom,

Has there been any progress on this since you posted? I'm now faced with a similar problem. I've got a Visual Studio 2005/Measurement Studio 8 application which uses a couple of NI USB-6008s via DAQmx. The application is all ready to go, and I'd ideally like to ship a single msi to our users containing everything they need. A trimmed-down driver installer just for the USB-6008s would possibly be a viable solution, but it would be infinitely preferable if we could ship one msi.

Yes- the NI-DAQmx runtime versions are now available from the ni.com Drivers and Updates section.  Here's a direct link to the download page.

My next question would be if there is a way of incorporating the installation of these drivers (which my project requires) into my Measurement Studio project installer?

It would be highly desirable if my users only had to run one single installer to install everthing they needed to run my project on a 'clean' machine.

I've never worked with MEasurement Studio Installers, but the runtime we're discussing here can be called from the command-line with several parameters to influence its behaviour. This is how we incorporated the NIDAQ installer into our application's main installer.

I'd be very interested in hearing how you managed to incorporate everything into one installer. We're nearing release with our product and we still have to ask our users to install two things: first the NI-DAQmx Run-time and second our own software.

Relating to this, is there any more news from NI about an even lighter-weight driver distribution? We're still obliged to ship a ~190Mb driver distribution with our own  ~5Mb software installer! Is there any chance of seeing a further stripped-down driver release (for us we only would need the USB-DAQ related components).

Alternatively, would there be a possibility of having Measurement Studio (for example) produce, on request, a single installer containing both the user software and any dependant drivers to give a complete one-stop installer for NI-DAQmx based user software?

Thanks for your feedback, we take it very seriously. We are currently working on ways to make our installers smaller. It is not as easy as it sounds, but we understand it is a big issue for some customers, so we do have plans to try to make those customers successfull.

Believe me as a programmer, I can fully appreciate that it's very much easier said than done!

Having said that, having smaller, more speciailised installers or, better still, the ability to roll up everything a particular program needs to run into one installer would be a massive bonus for us. We eagerly await any developements... do keep us posted!
