usb-6501 error

I have upgraded to LabVIEW 2011, CVI 2010, NI-DAQmx 9.3.5, etc.  I am now having problems using an USB-6501 device on my system.  I had to modify a CVI program since NI changed the definition of "TaskHandle" in their code.  The program was unable to open the 6501 device.  In MAX, there was a yellow error marker associated with the device and a message about an XP hotfix.  According to the KB article, I didn't need the hotfix, so I didn't install it.  I was unable to run a self-test on the device (selection grayed out).  I suspected a problem with the hardware, so I checked the device out on a Windows 7 machine with an older version of DAQ software.  Self-test ran fine on this machine.  I deleted the device from the XP machine and then reconnected the hardware.  The device is not identified in MAX now.  If I try to create a new device, there is no option for the 6501 or similar device in the list of choices.  Do I need to revert to an older version of NI-DAQ to use this device under XP?  Thanks.

Double_D,

An older version of DAQmx shouldn't fix your problem. DAQmx 9.3.5, and even the newest 9.4 support the 6501. There is a note in the readme file that when using USB DAQ devices with Win XP to use hotfix from Microsoft's KB.

I didn't apply the hotfix initially because the KB says to apply it only to systems experiencing a very specific stop error (which I haven't seen).  I have now applied the hotfix, but my USB-6501 is still not recognized in MAX.  The reason I mentioned reverting to an earlier version of NI-DAQ is because the device worked with the previous version that was installed on this same XP machine.  I don't think there is a problem with the hardware, since it works on a Windows 7 machine (with an older version of NI-DAQ).  I suppose I could install the latest version of NI-DAQ on the Windows 7 machine and see what happens; I'm somewhat reluctant to do that, though.

Hi Double_D,

Here's a couple of potential fixes that you can try:

1. Repair the DAQmx Driver, just in case something went wrong during installation

2. Check if you can see the device appears correctly in the Device Manager

3. Check to see that the NI Device Loader is started

4. Trying connecting the device to different usb ports

5. As a last option, you can try uninstalling and then reinstalling max. The steps are found in this kb

I hope one of these works for you.  If not, then some more information could be beneficial.  For example, the order of installation for when you upgraded to the newer software versions and whether you are using any other devices alongside the usb-6501.

The USB-6501 appeared in the device list in Device Manager with no errors indicated even when it wasn't working.  The links provided did not work, but I found an article on the NI Device Loader on the NI site.  This didn't appear to be running.  I did a repair on the NI-DAQ software (NI-DAQmX 9.3.5, ADE support, and Max Config. Support Utility) from Add/Remove Programs.  I can now see the USB-6501 in MAX and self-test passed.  Thanks for your help.
