I have seen this on the LabVIEW Home Screen about a mandatory update 3.0.
It has ultimately sent me to this page: http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/2261/lang/en
Based on the "supposed" release date (1/8/11 a.k.a. FRC Kickoff), is this something that needs to be installed as soon as the 2011 FRC version of LabVIEW is installed?
It just seemed weird to me about an update before the release (and shown this notification on the 2010 Home page).

Wait until after you install the software thats will be in your 2011 KOP
"This software update is meant to be installed ONLY after installing LabVIEW FRC from the DVD that comes with the 2011 Controls Kit or on the Classmate computer that comes with the kit."

Think about it a minute. NI had to prepare the preliminary software, release and test the software (which takes time), burn the CD's, set up the licenceing for hundreds of teams, prepare the packaging, and get thingsready in general. The game wasn't finalized until recently. It make businiess sense to get everything the can ready early, then, once they know the game they develop the much smaller portion of the software needed for that and have it as an update.
This is just my thoughts on why they would have an update prior to the official release.

LockheedJoe is correct - a lot has to be in place way before kickoff. The exact reason you saw the update message on your 2010 Getting Started Window is because I enabled the hook for that on our backend. That same hook will be used throughout the season if we need to post another update. It's one more way for us to help keep you up to date, so you don't go to a competition unprepared. To reiterate the steps:
1. Install the 2011 software from the kit DVD
2. Download and install updates
