What constitutes an E_COMM_ERROR on NI Fieldbus?

I have a test station with NI Communications Manager and Configurator version 2.3 and my application installed. My application does a lot of reading and writing into blocks and their parameters and very often my application would drop an E_COMM_ERROR while writing, using the function fb_write_unsigned8 as an example. This error is intermittent and it may not reappear with the same fieldbus device, same application, writing function and parameter. I appreciate it if somebody would tell me what constitutes an E_COMM_ERROR and what forms it's intermittentness.

Usually the error E_COMM_ERROR is caused by abnormal communications in fieldbus network, especially when the fieldbus traffic is heavy. So you might need to adjust some network parameters to avoid communication failure.
