Browser asking for redirection with each login

Nick, in the last few days IE has started displaying an empty page titled "NI" and popping a confirmation dialog about being redirected to a non-secure site whenever I try to log in. It does this on several different computers, so I doubt it has to do with the security settings. Any idea why? Did you change something?

P.S. The URL I use for logging in is

I observed the same thing during the last few days.

Me too.

I had thought it was something our local IT had done until I started seeing it at home too.

tst,
Sorry for the delay in response, I was off in vacation land for awhile.  I don't get an empty NI page when I try to go to the login URL you use, but I do get this pop-up.

I don't know of anything that changed on our end, but that doesn't mean nothing changed.  The User Profile login screen is something we have little control over so it's possible something there changed.  Also, maybe IE was updated?

I can see why it's doing it.  When you move from the login screen which is secure (https://sine.ni.com/apps/utf8/niup.ni) to the forums (http://forums.ni.com/) you are moving from a https connection to a http connection.  I don't think any of this changed in the last few weeks, however Smiley Indifferent

The empty page is the background for that dialog. Once you OK it it proceeds fine.

I remember Molly saying that the basic logging is site wide and not forums specific. Can you talk to the web team of the site about this? I certainly didn't upgrade IE. It might have been one of the Windows updates, but one of these computers is running WinME which I don't think has automatic updates available.

Nick, any word on this?

I'm sure it's a small annoyance to anyone who tries to log in, and that would be a lot of people.

Hi tst,

There hasn't been any word on this, but I have revived the inquiry so hopefully I can find out why the behavior changed.

I noticed that I don't have this problem when using Firefox, and I have seen this problem on other websites with IE.  I don't know if that necessarily means IE changed, but I'll try to find out.

Edit:  I found this Microsoft KB that describes the problem.  My browser options are set up so that I should not get this warning, but I do.  I think this is a problem with IE, rather than with something that changed on ni.com.

Thanks,
Laura

Thanks, Laura.

Something definitely changed somewhere, because we all started seeing this at the same time (and I see it on several computers). This change was most likely either at the NI web site or in IE. Personally, I find it more likely that it was the site because one of the computers has windows ME installed, which should not get automatic updates, as far as I know.

Hi tst,

It does look like it's at least possible that Windows ME could have automatic updates enabled.

Can you check to see if your Windows ME computer has the same version of IE that your Windows XP computers have?

Thanks!
Laura

I upgraded to IE7 and the problem no longer appears. 🙂
