I agree 100 % to your comments. I believe we all understand the difference between apples and oranges and of course I was just kidding as usual in my last post.
Still, I think we could start a fair challenge, by introducing a correction factor based on the present historical status. The figures I gave could be used to normalize the score of each team. I'll try to introduce that in my next posts if I have some spare time...

As a different type of rating/ranking factor, what about the ratio of replies to the number of started threads? The primary problem I see with that approach is that some started threads are for feedback or job postings and not actual questions. It may bias things towards the blue folks as they are less likely to need to start threads, but it may have interesting results.

And to act as a sounding board...

Does this mean that if somone never answers Q's but just posts impresive examples, are they contributing less than others that just answer?

What I would like to see, way off in the future when all good things come to be...

1) The top 20-30 contributors are given the option to classify Q & A into group like GUI, Serail, FP, DAQ, Performance, Office, GPIB, bugs, etc.

2) The above catagories become sub-pages of the top (eg LV) so we start to get our discussion sorted based on topic.

3) once the catagories start to develop, we can track our performance in each area. This would end up looking alot like the old exchange with top contributors in catagories, but these catagories will be assigned by the more experienced travellers as apposed to the user guessing were to post the Q.

This way our experts in the specialty areas can get the recognition they deserve.

Besides, I miss the old days when I could answer one question in FP and force YOU to answer 10 more Q's!

This could lead to other degrees of recognition when one our our experts starts to demonstrate a mastery of more than one specialty area.

This still leads me back to the "Developer Exchange Hall of Fame".

Interesting reading...

The term "expert".... hummm....

I thought I was an okay LabView guy. Doing good things.. Having fun..
Then I read some of the questions from people who have less than 10 questions and practically no answers.
From a participation point of view, we would refer to them as "newbies".

HOWEVER...!!!...

That is often misleading. The questions they ask are light-years beyond what I would attempt with LV.
These guys are deep in the development of code.. Then they are stuck on a problem. They ask the question in the LV forum (that often remain unanswered). No gold bars to their credit.. But they are implementing code which pushes the enveloppe of LV.

Hummm...

So who's the real expert??

With all that blah blah... above (if you're still reading this). I do understand what you are saying. We have our "expertise" in some form or another. The LV forum could be further broken down into areas that cover certain features as you have listed in your reply... That could become interesting.. It might also keep the forum cleaner.. (and easier to search).

There is one thing I forgot... probably the most important thing.
Regardless of "expertise", I (we) should not forget that the success of this forum is the participation / contribution of all. That is more important than the level of expertise... 😉

I guess my desire to have our top contributors officially (I mean resume type official) recognized as "Experts" has slipped through.

I am very proud of the work done by our members and would love to have the oppertunity to nominate a bunch of them as Experts.

I'm finding out there are 2 camps..

And people who had some fun with it, but managed to survive the transition with only a few scars...

the consensus was: back up EVERYTHING... everything... (complete disk image)
Activate the RESTORE feature (I will find out tonight if I enabled it... unlikely press F8 at bootup to find out).

If worse comes to worse, I'll get that nice Serial-ATA drive for the PC.. 🙂
And install Win2K AND LINUX..

More info on the XP saga..

Recovered from the deadly SP2.

Everything "appears" to be there.

Many things need to be re-installed (no longer functional). Incuding the anti-virus...

I am told that once XP works with SP2, it is (apparently) better...
Heck... new HD :D... maybe I'll try that.. From scratch...

I've had good luck with SP2 when it's been installed from scratch.

My usual procedure is something like this. Always restart when prompted between steps.

1. Setup any partitions needed
2. Format c: (take that Bill)
3. Install XP
4. Go to Windows Update and install all Critical Updates
   (There are some that need to be installed before SP2 can be)
5. Back to Windows Update to get SP2
6. Keep going back to Windows Update until there are no more Critical Updates
7. Now install virus scanner, firewall other security software
8. Finally, start installing the rest of your applicaitons.
   (of course LabVIEW should be first)

This has worked well on every machine I've tried it on. I can't remember a single machine that didn't have problems when I just tried the PS2 update. The same machines work fine with SP2 when done from scratch. YMMV
