Finding new replies to old threads

There's currently not an easy way to find new replies to old threads. Take LabVIEW for example. I don't want to subscribe to it because it's huge, but I would occassionally like to view some of the new replies. Unfortunately, sometimes new replies are submitted to relatively old threads. I can quickly see that there are "3 new replies" for example, but how can I quickly access the 3 new replies? It would be nice if I could click on the "3" to load just those 3 replies in a new window. Instead, I currently have to click through page after page after page until I come across the bolded (i.e. new, unread reply).

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Bob P -

This is an interesting question. Unfortunately, I have some suggestions to help you, but not the exact functionality you are requesting.

When you are on the main page (forums.ni.com) you can see how many new messages are in each board. And, when you are on a board page, you can see how many new messages are in each thread. From this page, if you click on the number in the NEW column, you are taken straight to the new messages in the thread. But, this doesn't answer the question of how to find those threads that have been updated in the first place.

In your profile, you can determine how many threads you would like to view per board page, so you can increase the number so that you don't have to scroll through so many pages to find the new topics. I looked to see if there was a way that you could change the order of the threads in the board view to sort them by last update date rather than creation date so that the new threads would show up at the top of the list, but I didn't see that option.

I will submit this as a feature request, and hopefully it will be something that we can add to the community moving forward.

Thanks for the feedback,

Thanks Molly. When you are on a board page, such as LabVIEW, having the option to sort threads by "Latest Post" date would be an excellent feature. Sorting by author on the board page would be another excellent feature in my opinion. Without such a feature, I fear that any dicussions deeper than 5 pages or so will get very little attention, even when someone posts a new reply.

Thanks

Dear Molly,

sorting by "Latest Post" is one of my favourite wishes.

Other forums have this as default behaviour.

We were able to release this feature to the community this morning.

You can sort the messages in the board view by the date the thread was started or by the date of the most recent post to the thread. The default is to sort it by the most recent post to the thread so that messages with new activity are at the top of the list.

To change the sort order for your account, login to your profile and click on the preferences tab. Make any changes you would like and be sure to click Save Changes.

Thanks!
