You are exactly right.  The search technology was updated recently, and it appears that the fields do not operate the same way they used to.  I will try to find out how they are actually being used and update the labels on them appropriately.

Thanks!

Hi Molly,

I have a related question: How can I perform an "OR" search? For example, I would like to see all posts with keywords "modbus" and all posts with keywords "j1939". If I enter them together, separated by a space or by an "OR" I don't get anything.

Thanks in advance!

Traxx and Khalid,
I have investigated the behavior and it looks like:
"With any of the words"
and
"With all of the words"
both "AND" everything together.  Therefore, currently there is no "OR" function in the Discussion Forums search.

The good news is that this issue is known and is being
actively addressed.

A workaround for the time being is to go to our Developer Zone and use the search box at the top of the screen where is says "NI Developer Zone" in the dropdown.  Keywords you want to "OR" together put in parentheses as described in our site search tips.

Here's an example.

Once you get the Developer Zone results, you can click on the Discussion Forums section on the left side to filter them down.

This has been fixed and we have some new search features:

You can now use the syntax shown below in the Simple search box or from the "all the words" field in the Advanced search page.

Available query types include:
• Boolean queries, with grouping:
(LabVIEW AND CVI) OR VB
LabVIEW NOT CVI

Note that operators must be capitalized.

• Wildcard searches
Lab* returns LabVIEW, LabWindows
Note that you cannot use a wildcard as the first character of a search.

• Proximity searches
"find boolean"~20 will return any entry containing "find" and "boolean" within 20 words of one another.
Note that common words such as "and" and "the" are not indexed, nor included in the proximity
calculation.

I hope this makes searching more productive Smiley Happy

New problem, Nick - when searching for something using the advanced search (maybe the regular too), sorting the results by one of the columns causes the Message Body checkbox to become unchecked for the new search, effectively preventing us from sorting the results.

Nick,

Thanks for the fix. But have noticed a problem -- it's probably related: under my profile, for the 'Subscription Search Query' I entered "Modbus OR J1939" (w/out the quotes). And I started getting notifications for messages with the word "or"! Is the search format different for that query?

Thanks,

-Khalid

I have confirmed this and have reported it.  Thanks for catching that!

Until recently, it was possible to search for all the post of a given contributor. Seems that this facility has been lost. Unfortunately, the E-List has been entirely based on this function, and I can't afford to rewrite the post search entirely. Can anybody tell me what's going on ?

Several things have been changed with Advanced search and we are slowly finding the more subtle differences.  With the particular reported issue I notice that you MUST enter a search term to get the search to return anything.  You can't just leave the search fields blank.

Is there any way you can us the "tracker" to find all the posts by a user?
