How to reply to specific post

Probably a dumb question with a simple answer but ...

I was recently very confused until I found I was using "Sort Messages by Threading" as opposed to "Oldest to Newest". However it raises a question:

When I view a thread, there is only one "Reply" link that I see in the top left of the page showing multiple posts in a thread.

So, how do I know what post I'm replying to when I hit that Reply link?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

Each individual post in a thread also has a reply link in the upper left corner of the post.

These are in bold black text as opposed to the main blue reply link that you mentioned. Do you see them?

Ahhh I see .. those are actually links!! Thanks very much, altenbach.

To the NI forum managers, I'd suggest they should be in blue. Even then, their position would still look like a heading, so really that "Reply" link should really be in the lower right of each post's main box, and/or listed in the "Options" pull down.

(And if anyone knows, I'm still wondering what post the lone blue Reply link in the top left of the thread listing will reply to.)

Thanks,
Ian

Ian W -

The reply button at the top of the page (the blue one) will reply to the original message in the thread.
The reply buttons on each message (the black ones) will reply to that particular message.

For example, if a thread has this structure:

Question
-Reply 1
--Reply A to Reply 1
--Reply B to Reply 1
---Reply x to Reply B
-Reply 2

The blue reply button at the top of the page will add a
-Reply 3
to the very end of the thread.

The black reply buttons at the top of each message will reply to that particular message. That is how Reply A, Reply B, and Reply x were created in the example above.

Hope that helps. If the threading view isn't the easiest way for you to view the messages, then feel free to change your settings to "Oldest to Newest" or "Newest to Oldest" to best fit your needs.

Thanks!

Hi henryfg,

Is it possible that you are using Firefox?  I know that when I use this browser, it looks like you cannot edit the textbox because there is no blinking cursor.  However, when I start typing, I am able to enter text in the textbox.

Thanks,
Laura

It also seems to be a problem sometimes if the connection is bad and some page elements do not load. Allowing adding text to the text box seem to be the last thing that gets activated. If the page stalls, you cannot edit.

henryfg,

personal advice is to ditch IE (if possible) and move over to firefox.  Or opera, or anything really, just not IE.

Not really saying this will fix the problem (I'm using Firefox on WinXP and I've never had a problem), but I just have an allergic reaction to IE.

Hi Henry,

I noticed that sometimes you are able to type in the textbox from your past posts.  Have you noticed a difference between when you are and when you aren't able to enter text?  Also, can you give the exact version of IE you are using?  You can find it at Help >> About Internet Explorer.

I'm not sure what else I can suggest other than to try a different browser such as Firefox.  We will report this issue.

Thanks,
Laura
