2) A common location where we could post images before answering questions. This way the pre-posted attachments' upload times do not count against our edit times. All of the images here would automatically link to #1 above.

Why not just start a thread for this yourself?

One potential disadvantage this will have is an address change in the future. The current system will at least (I presume) keep the image with the post.

Another potential problem is that people will use big images, which make reading the page very annoying. In such cases, I usually prefer to open the image in a new window or even download it and open it in a picture viewer.

Dynamik, this is a forum wishlist, not a LV wishlist.

1) This line of thought  assumes all post worth searching have been posted in the last 6 months. Smiley Surprised

It's even worse. I have, reluctantly, become used to using the advanced search for the forums (which now at least seems to retrieve those posts it didn't use to), but now I tried using the "regular" search box which can be found inside in the thread's page and discovered, to my horror, that it defaults to 90 days (and you only get the option to change it after you do the search). This means that even if there are "regular" users who do decide to search for an answer before posting, they will only be able to get posts from the last 3 months. Why? What's the logic behind this?

Molly, here's another one to chalk up for the threading issues -

I switched to viewing threads by oldest to newest sorting, which makes the linking OK. This theoretically works fine, but I found out that if you click the number in the New column in the board (which brings you to the oldest unread post in the thread) and then click a link inside the thread (let's say to a picture attachment) and click "Back", you are brought to the first page of the thread and not to the page where you were before. I saw it in several threads, most recently in the Prime number challenge thread, which has a picture in the last page.

Thanks tst!
I have been giving all the feedback about the issues in threading view to the forum developers.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like most of the things we are reporting will be able to be fixed.
My question is, should we change the default view to one of the other sort (ascending/descending)?  Keep in mind that each individual can change their personal default at any time and you can temporarily change how you view the thread at any time and that will remain to be true.
Should we take a poll?
Thanks!

Having used both methods for some time, I can say that as long as the threaded view isn't indented, it can be very confusing and disorienting, especially in long threads. Setting the default to an ascending by date order will ensure that the linking works properly for most people and will hopefully make people less confused. I assume people will get used to quoting, similar to what happens in the LAVA forums (although there the quoting is on by default). In summary, I say switch to sorting by ascending order.

Ben & Friends,

You now can add three files to your posts (without having to go back and edit it over and over again).

Have a great day!

Now that is a reason for 5 stars (although I'm guessing many people will go back and edit because they will want to place pictures and they need the address).

"...I'm guessing many people will go back and edit ..."

Yes.

In my case I took your suggestion and started posting the image before I start the reply. This lets me format my text to better fit the images.

I also finally figured out that I should keep my images small so they do not screw-up up the formatting of the thread. ( I know you did not aim that comment at me directly, but I did finally figure out I was causing problems with "image abuse"). Smiley Wink

PS

Molly,

Do images count as "1000 words"? It still seems that 5000 character limit is kinda small.

In the spirit of the discussion here:  http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=151310":

It would be nice to have LabVIEW log un-trapped/un-routed errors to an errors-log text file.  When having auto-error-handling enabled, one runs the risk of damaging equipment (or worse) when critical-code simply stops for an unanticipated error.  When auto-handling is off, we loose possibly valuable diagnostic information.  [Optionally] piping those errors to a log would be nice.
