NI Discussion Forum Upgrade - May 20, 2009

Am I the only person who finds that the space character at the end of an unfinished sentence gets removed by Firefox when typing at the end?

For example, if I type "Am I the ony person who ", then move the cursor to "ony", place the "l" in to correct my typo, then press End to return to the end of the sentence and start typing "finds that the space character..." what I actually get is:

"Am I the only person whofinds that the space character..." Smiley Sad

The space character that I left at the end of the unfinished sentence gets removed when I return to the end to finish that same sentence, and I end up with two concatenated words.

In fact, this seems to have changed a little. I just tried it again, and I get:

"Am I the only person who  finds that the space character..." A double space this time??

"Am I the only person who finds that the space character..." A good sentence!

"Am I the only person who  finds that the space characters..." A double space again!?

What's going on here??

I used to be able to start a post with the image from the previous.

THis AM it would not let me start the post with a picture. I had to type first.

I have posted replies with images only.

Not a problem but an observation.

My session rynning on my PC at home used to make me log in when I got home from work or in the AM. The new version did not log me out.

Q

When inserting a link previously did it default to open in a new window?

Quick update this morning:

I am still unable to turn on the new image features. I hope to have it turned on before the end of this week.

Thanks,

Laura

There have been a number of questions asked that I will try to address.  Keep in mind that I am still unable to turn on the new image features so I'm going to defer most of those questions until you actually get to use the new feature.

  • smercurio, Thoric: I also now see that the "phantom space" issue in Firefox still exists.  During my testing cycle it seemed to be gone but I am experiencing it now Smiley Sad
  • tst: I continue to pass along the feedback about adding the ability to easily track new posts to threads you post in
  • altenbach: deleting an image will make it disappear from your posts; uploading files with the same name does not break anything; you cannot click on an image and have it open in a new window; I'm not sure if you can link to your image gallery outside of the forums, the intention is to use it for images you embed in your posts and avatars; the initial limit on gallery size is 1000 images and it can be increased if needed; the gallery does not have much organization
  • smercurio: I have not seen text showing up in different languages sometime, I will report the issue.  Let me know if you can reproduce it reliably. I will also report the issue of switching between the editor and HTML
  • Ravens Fan: I do thing the button used to say submit instead of post. The new image posting will be fairly self explanatory once it is turned on. I will also add a section about it to the Help page. I am not sure if [New] used to be [NEW]
  • Ben: When inserting a new link, the default was not to open in a new window as far as I remember. Session handling did change a tad but should not pose any problems. I'm not sure what you mean by starting a reply with the image from the previous - do you just quote the previous post and not add any text? Check back once the new image functionality is enabled.

Because many of the problems with using the editor still exist, I am going to work to expedite our next upgrade to the forums because the hope is that many of the remaining editor issues will be addressed in the next version.

Thanks everyone,

Laura

A new one: When looking at a user's profile page the layout is all messed up on Firefox. It was fine before the upgrade. Attached is a screenshot of what it now looks like.

UPDATE: The level of "messed up" seems to vary. For example, take a look at altenbach's profile.

The profiles look just fine in IE. Hmmm... wonder how much testing Lithium does on non-IE browsers?

What I meant is copy the URL from an image in the thread and then hit reply.

Don't type anything just insert the image.

I just repeated it using the image in the previous reply. It would not insert.

Now that I have typed some text

still not inserting...

bad layout.png

this time I had to click outside the URL box before getting the image to insert.

Dumb Question

Why does your "about" box show up but I have never seen anyone elses?

Is my "About" visable to other users?

I have been using that box to keep notes on what peoples real names are along with some junk. Has thsi been visabel all along?

If so its a good thing I have not been keeping my "no reply" list there.

Yup. In fact, that's how I found out about the messed up layout. I had accidentally clicked on your name and it took me to your profile.I was amused by what I saw in the "About" box. Smiley Very Happy
