New Features on the NI Discussion Forums!

Is there a reason I can't dish out kudos? I have tried a number of times, but it does not show on the message tally, or my "given kudos" tally on my profile page 😞

Laura, could you change the sensitive areas of the kudos gadget?

There are two modes:

  1. to give kudos (click on the lower star area)
  2. to see who gave kudos (click on the number in the upper area)

It seems to me that option 2 should be the entire (differently colored) upper area, but apparently it is only the narrow number, making "aiming" quite difficult.

For example in the following message I tried to see who gave a kudos by clicking in the upper area, but instead gave one myself because I was slightly to the left of the number. (I don't think this message deserves any kudos. :D)

Maybe there should also be a grace period of a few minutes where we can click again to retract an accidentally given kudos. Similar to editing posts.

Christian,

I agree with you that something is off about the kudos logo.  When I read your message, I couldn't figure out what you were talking about, mostly because I didn't know there were different clicable areas on the logo until I went to that message thread to see what you are talking about.  First, are you saying you were able to give yourself kudos?  I didn't think that was possible.

I didn't even realize you could see who gave kudos by clicking on the upper area of the logo.  There is nothing obvious about it.  But I noticed if you have not given kudos, the whole logo is yellow.  You can give kudos by clicking on the star or clicking on the upper bar.  Once you have given them, the upper bar turns gray.  Then you can see who gave the kudos by clicking on the number.  But the only thing telling you that is the tool tip that pops up.  If no one has given a kudo, then the whole upper bar is clickable for giving the kudo.  I think I accidentally gave one for trying to see who gave a kudo on a message that had not received any and thus did not have a number, of course there are none to see if none have been given.

This all seems a little confusing because I was trying to figure out how the logo worked and I had not realized there were different clickable areas.  As I said, it wasn't obviouis.  So I agree with you that the logo is confusing, and the different areas for clicking are indistinguishable from each other and sometimes rather small.  A reworked logo that has obvious hyperlinks for giving kudos and seeing who gave kudos, is a great idea.

Sorry about my confusing language. I meant that "I (myself) gave a kudos to that message")

Hi altenbach,

I will submit the suggestion about the Kudos icon.  You can remove Kudos if needed from the Options menu.

Ed - what version of Firefox are you using?  I haven't had any other reports of not being able to give Kudos and I can do it with Firefox 2.

Thanks,

Laura

EDIT: also, I am thinking of providing more guidelines on how to use Kudos and Solutions.  With Kudos, I do believe the "Who Kudoed this message" page is hard to find.

I must say, I really like the 'solutions' thumbs up.

However the editor is slow.... I'm halfway a scentence than the cursor goes back (yeah I know it has been reported before, but nagging is a relieve)

Hi Ton,

I'm not sure if you saw the earlier post but by sizing up the editor window to something large can greatly reduce or eliminat the the wacky cursor behaviour.

I hadn't noticed that option on the menu before.  I tried it and it took me to a Confirmation page.   I clicked confirm and got this message:

Authentication Failed.

The link you clicked is requesting an operation that requires authentication, but the authentication failed.

There are five main reasons why this may happen:

1) The link you clicked on was not generated for you, but was intended only for someone else's use to perform an action on their account. If the other person pasted such a link into a message body or you were re-directed to such a link from another link you clicked on, the authentication will fail and you will arrive here instead.

2) The link was valid for you, but your authentication ticket has expired. If this is the case, hit the back button in your browser and refresh the page containing the link. You will then get a fresh ticket and when you click on the link again it will work.

3) Your browser session may have expired. If so, hit the back button in your browser, then refresh the page containing the link you clicked on. You will get a fresh ticket and if you click on the link again it will work.

4) Your browser may be set to not accept session cookies (or the cookie may have been deleted, or you may have been prompted and refused the cookie), in this case you should modify your browser settings to accept session cookies, and/or accept the session cookie if you are prompted, in order to use this site.

5) Your browser arrived at this location from someplace other than this site (an external link or site), or your browser or security software may be set to not send referrer information, in this case you should use the links on this site itself or verify that your browser or security software settings allow sending referrer information, in order to use this site.
