Three Boxes

Hi,

I think these ratings are a waste of time.

People are just not consistent when applying them, especial in this new forum.

You can get responses posted with loads of detail, examples etc and all you get is a Thanks (if your lucky). Or you see one liners that get loads of stars and you think, now why did that get that many stars.

I think all you can hopeful is a few words of thanks and not too many "I think you have mis-understood my question...." .

@Molly K wrote:

N/A: The answer was simply a point of clarification to my original question
1-3: The answer didn't really help answer my question, but thanks for your assistance!
4- 7: The answer helped with a portion of my question, but I still need some additional help!
8-10: The answer has solved my problem completely! Now I'm a happy camper!

Perhaps if the post gets a rating greater than 5, the thread is moved to the Answered Questions. (Rather than just after 1 post) I find usually there is a couple of posts required with clarifications etc before the solution is posted.

"the thread is moved to the Answered Questions"

This is not quite as bad as it is now but we could do even better.

I would like the original poster to be given the opertunity to indicate if the Q has been answered.

I think of it as being similar to when I am giving a talk and I get a Q from the audience. After responding, I ask the person who posed the Q if I answered their Q.
I do not tourn the rest of the crowd and ask them "Did I answer the Q?".

I understand the exchange would have to be changed to support this approach.

If this is done we will also have to deal with the people who post a Q and we never see them again. In this case we should apply a timeout of about 2 weeks. If a Q has a response and is static for two weeks, then mark as answered.

This is just my 2 cents.

To throw some other ideas into the mix:

1)what about the members who tend to specialize in a certain area? For example, prior to the change over, I was the Top Enthusiast in the FieldPoint category, having responded to more than 330 posts in the category. The second enthusiast had 40 answers. I still tend to dominate in the FieldPoint category, but that is no longer recognizable by the system as I am only considered Active overall and not Enthusiastic because I tend to concentrate my answers in a single category.

2) What about recognition for certifications. There are plenty of Certified LabVIEW, TestStand and CVI Developers who participate on the forums. Can the Certifications be added under the 3 Box rating?

Hi Aaron!

Thank you for sharing these thoughts!

I think the more "decorations" we get the better.
How about icons to also indicate other accomplishments, LZ-Zone challenge winners, NI week paper winners, MVP's, ...

I passped these ideas along when the new exchange was in development.

The three bar scheme is an improvementover the old 2-level scheme.

See my earlier posting re:more levels of recognition.

I think the list of contributors sorted by # of contributions should be brouhgt back! It is missed by many and when it comes down to it, represented about the fairest ranking of contributors to a subject. Along with that, it made it easy to figure out how many questions I had to answer in FP, to force you to answer more (i.e. X10 rule)!

Summarizing;
I want...
more decorations
more lists
more levels of recognition
more stars (oops, Freudian slip)
less un-answered questions

Ray!!!

You stole my line!!!

Aren't we here for the free cup? 😉

I think everyone deserves 5 stars. Without you guys and whatever recommendations you've been giving out over ther years, I (and others) would not be having the fun we are having today developping solutions.

5 cheers to everyone.
