Will the rating go down ?

Hi Laura,

Will the ratings drop down suddenly from Proven Veteran to Veteran within the change of a week ?!

My avg msg rating upto last week was 4.7 for some 11 or 12 msgs, and my rating was Proven Veteran.

But today mornign, when I logged on, I found my rating as Veteran, with a avg msg rating of 2.3 for some 37 msgs.

I'm confused a bit whether my quality of replies ve dropped or am I replying too much thinking that it 'll boost my rating...

Can you please go thro' the below link & back here ?

Please clarify me.

Other users have been hit by a "Serial (rating) Killer" in the past.  It seems a not very well meaning user went through many of your posts and tagging them with single stars.

I don't know how good the forum logging is to possibly identify the suspects.

I don't like the current rating systems, because it can be abused for such stunts. Personally, I only give two possible ratings (1) five stars if deserved, (2) no rating otherwise. A scale from 1 to 5 stars is meaningless for this purpose because there is no real calibration.

This has been discussed in the past. It is not clear if a single star is a negative or a positive rating, but from the dependence of the "proven" tag on a high ratings, single stars do have a negative impact. This should not be that way. The "proven" tag should probably depend on the total amount of ratings received and not their average value.

So, don't feel bad and assume that a single star is also an encouragment and better than no star. Maybe it was meant that way. 🙂

I'm not a big fan of the rating system either. There are a lot of goofy things that can happen. A new user can post a response to one of the 'pat someone on the back'  threads in the Breakpoint board and get 5 stars - instant 'proven' rating. Since a question can be given stars, there are also new users with 'proven' status. I've also seen posts where users are confused about the 1 to 5 stars; thinking 1 is the highest. After all, we have terms like 'you're number 1' and someone who wins is the person who finished in 1st place.

Don't worry so much about the drop in ratings. Just keep doing what you have been doing.

Ditto the previous comments!

Please hang in there and keep helping as you have.

There are many more people on this fourm that will stick with you and will try to do you good.

The "one-star-wariors" don't seem to stick around.

I was hit by one years ago and the contributors here brought me back from the brink.

So please to not walk the path of the guru.

Ben

Hi Ben & All,

Thank you so much for the moral support. I saw the link you had shown. I swear that I wont quit like a coward. I ll stand & fight the one-star warriors till there is no star left in the sky.

From the time before 2 yrs, when my team lead quit the company & went somewhere else, I sat all thro' the night to learn many things from the Forums. So, I ll rise to the occasion like a Phoenix ( like when I did back 2 years ago when my boss asked me personally if I could carry the burden of our huge project by leading it from the front or he needed to recruit a new team-lead for that purpose) & contribute atleast a little of my knowledge to the people who search the Forums for ideas.

Again, to my disbelief, I saw today that nearly most of my replies are rated high (5Stars) ! Smiley Surprised

When I rate, I either give 5 stars for the posts that are really their worth in gold for their ideas, or just leave them untouched.

It clearly seems that somebody has deliberately played in the forums.

But one final opinion : The Stars are definitely moral boosters. Smiley Wink

Ben:

OT: You mentioned the guru today, he is back (talk about coincidence) and is need of assistance, very odd that a member with a very similar name replied:

http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=170&message.id=242586

Partha:
Don't let the black hole who sucked your stars away get you down. Keep up the good work and your star clusters will return.

I only give 0 or 5, unless it is an acidic post.

Best Wishes

-AK2DM

Given that the present message rating system might be tricky to completely re-design, as a compromise proposal perhaps only NI staff (blue bar members) should be able to rate forum messages? This might improve consistancy and avoid the pitfalls of inadvertantly upsetting some vengeful member...
