the fp modules (network and I/O modules) are installed, configured and tested from MAX (Measurement & Automation) environment (see the following link):

you can download the manual of your module in which there is explained how to configure and test it.

Can I insert new modules while the pre-existing system is running an application? And if so, how can I recognise new modules, and configure them?????
you can substitute/replace a module I/O in a fp system, because the I/O modules are hot Pnp.
But if yon have to substitute the network module or add a newer fp I/O module you have to power off the system and then reconfigure it from MAX.
