I have MAX 5.4 or 5.5 now running with the older VISA 5.0.3.They are not tied to each other. NI tech support also stated that this issue is related to the VISA driver not to MAX. MAX is just a GUI for the VISA and DAQ drivers configurations.

I deinstalled the VISA package from the windows program manager and installed the old VISA package from the NI homepage.

Do folow the "check for updates" requests though 😉

Yes that is good news.  I was able to configure a 488.2 scope connected through a TAMS L488, and Agilent E5810A and B gateways.  The automatic configure didn't work, but easy to do manually.  Just to be clear, this is VISA 5.4.1 for Windows only, the Linux version is also out but is still hardcoded for NI gateways only.
