Our Agilent 34972 seems to respond to an *IDN? query over an USB connection even if is setup on its frontpanel to a "LAN-connection". Other queries, doing "real measurements" fail then. Is such behaviour still covered by the ( VISA ? ) specs or should I complain to Agilent about a firmware bug.

Hello,
I don´t really understand the problem. Can you explain it more detailed? Do you get an error message? What do you expect from *IDN? Maybe can you post your VI?

The device was setup to "Lan-Connection" on it's front-panel , but there was no lan connection. The device was connected by an USB cable to the PC instead. Using the VISA test-panel in MAX it still responded to an *IDN? query as you expected,if it would have been configured to USB-connection on its frontpanel. Lateron READ? queries were failing with timeout errors ( expected due to the wrong configuration setup for the used cabling). But shouldn't the *IDN? fail in that case too?
As we noticed one day later that device also loses its configuration setting (stored in NVRAM ) after a poweron cycle. So we decided to send that device to repair

Ok, I hope it will work with the repaired device.
