Alternative to serialtest under linux? Hangs or fails.

I have tried installing a 2-port RS-485 PCI serial board under Scientific Linux 4 and xubuntu 7 with no luck. The setup process seems to go fine under either OS, but the serialtest either fails (SL4) or hangs (ubuntu).

Is there some other way to test this other than serialtest? I'd like to be able to do some troubleshooting to find where the problem lies and find out if there's just some setup/software conflict or if there's actually something wrong with my board or null modem cable.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
