E3631 GPIB interface

Hello,

I have just started using LabVIEW. I need the most basic help.

I have installed LabVIEW 2011. I have a power supply E3631A by Agilent. I want to control it using the GPIB interface. I connected the power supply to my computer using the HP10833A GPIB cable. I open MAX but it doesn't list my power supply instrument. I have installed the NI-VISA software as well. I have selected the interface option as 'HP-IB / 488' (same as GPIB I think. It gives only 2 options RS232 or HP-IB). I set the address as 05.

I tried adding a new device under MAX. I select the 'GPIB-VXI interface' option. It asks for a primary address (I set it to 05). Secondary address(I do not know what this is or if I need to set it), GPIB controller number (not sure about ths as well). then it asks for GPIB-VXI number and logical address which I again do not know. So it finally shows the resource name as GPIB-VXI0::0::INSTR. But even this doesn't help. It says MAX could not open a VISA session to this static device.

Anyone with suggestions?

Thanks.

Regards,

Nik

Undo just about everything. Nothing you did that relates to VXI is close to being correct.

In order to use an Agilent GPIB controller, you have to enable Tulip Support in MAX. Once you have done that, the interface should be listed and then you can start using the instrument driver that you download from NI.

It would have been so much simpler if you had a GPIB controller from NI. You are either a student that has no choice or you were seriously misinformed.

Hi,

I enabled the Tupil support but still my device isn't listed. I forgot to mention that I am running LabVIEW and VISA from Agilent infiniium DSO80804B since that's my source to get a GPIB port. Do I have to make any more changes to get it going?

Sorry, I have no idea. You'll need to ask Agilent.

I thought you have to upgrade your Agilent IO Libraries Suite to the latest version.

The obsolete Agilent's IO Libraries Suite can not co-work with Ni-VISA.

I updated the Agilent I/O libraries to 16.2 but it still doesn't show up. I tried using the Agilent connection expert and it does not show the GPIB0 card itself even when device manager in Windows shows it.

Any idea what's wrong?

If you use Agilent software with Agilent hardware, then you really do need to ask them. Nothing to do with NI.

If youcommunicate via gpib and LabVIEW with the DSO, the same type of interfacing should work for the power supply.

It sounds like he installed LabVIEW and NI-VISA on the DSO itself since the new DSOs are essentially Windows boxes.

That is possible, but he also claims to use it from LV
