GPIB-ENET

Hello,

I'm now using a GPIB-ENET (not GPIB-ENET/100) in windows XP, since I cannot assign IP address in XP, so I installed a virtual machine (using VMware) with windows 98, I've installed the NI488.2 version 2.2 on this windows 98 to config the device.

My problem is as follows:

1.  when I connect the box to the internet, the READY LED is always flashing, no matter how long I wait, then I tried to assign an IP address (using Assign IP Address in MAX), but it doesn't work, the "ready" is not steady.  I'm pretty sure that the two addresses are in the same subnet and the address for the box is available.
2.  I even tried with crossover network cables
 ( just as http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/74BDDF8CE0272EE086256A9900755ECE)
but the I assign an IP address 169.154.128.20 to my host machine (windows XP) , and the IP address assigned to the box is definitely in the same subnet (the three sets of numbers are same.) BUt the "ready " is always flashing.

Could anyone give me some tips on assign IP address with virtual machines,  thank you very much.

Hello Weh,

1. Please use ipassign.exe instead of MAX to assign the IP address to the device in your Windows 98 installation, as described in KB 3IEAEPQG.

2. Are you sure that 169.154.128.* is the correct subnet for your network? Typically, a private network should use addresses from the class A subnet 10.x.x.x or the class B subnet 192.168.x.x. Both your XP installation and your Windows 98 installation should be configured to use a (different) permanent address in one of those address ranges. Then the GPIB-ENET should be assigned a free address from the same subnet.

Also, the XP PC is not necessarily in the same subnet even if the first three numbers of the IP address match - the subnet might be restricted even further by a subnet mask other than 255.255.255.0. Please check that setting, too.

I hope this helps getting you started with your GPIB-ENET.

Regards,
Johannes
