Unable to use the HP3458A as supported equipment in Calibration Executive (V3.4) routines. The PXI-4130 routine becomes very lengthy in manual mode! Also MAX (V4.6.2f1) responds with "The device did not respond to a *IDN? query" when the 3458A is scanned. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

Hi Frank,
According to the manual for that instrument, it responds to a "ID?" query and not "*IDN?", so the "The device did not respond to a *IDN? query" is expected.
Can you get the 3458A to respond to any commands? I would first try to establish communication through the GPIB Interactive Control. If you have never used it before, open it, type help, and then click on Getting Started.
You may run into problems because that DMM was made before the IEEE 488.2 standard. This forum post indicates that a END ON or END ALWAYS command will have to be sent after a reset to get it to respond correctly.

Depending on the internal FW of the device it may recognize either or BOTH 488.2 (SCPI) commands and HPML (Hewitt-Packard Multi-Meter Language) . You might try
:SYSTem:LANGuage? the Syst:Lang [HPML|SCPI|?] query and command are supported in both command sets and tells (or sets) the language selection.

I'm seeing the same problem with Calibration Exec. version 3.5 for win7. Frank did you get it working and how?

Hi MikeEmerson,
You can not use/select the HP 3458A in auto mode because it can not reach the 2A limit required. Additionally, in the Calibration Executive Help file in the 'NI PXI-4130 Calibration Procedure' article it states the following:
"Note The NI 4071 is the only DMM supported in automated mode."
