Interfacing GPIB IEEE 488.2 functions to IEEE 488.1 standard

Does anyone know you're supposed to program differently for IEEE 488.2 and IEEE 488.1?  Our company has two DMMs, the HP34401 and HP3458.  The HP34401 uses 488.2 while the HP3458 uses the 488.1 standard.  Everything works fine for the HP34401 (IEEE 488.2), but has odd formatting behavior for the HP3458 (IEEE 488.1).  How can we use the function calls for the 488.2 to call 488.1 equipment?
