PCI-GPIB throwing BSOD on hardware profile deactivation

Hi there,

I have been getting blue screens with our PCI-GPIB card, currently using the driver from ni4882271 as I read in another post that it had solved their problem. Our setup consists of a Dell Precision T3400 workstation connected to an AB API 3000 mass spec being interfaced with Analyst software version 1.4.2. The card communicates without issue to the mass spec, but whenever a hardware profile is deactivated inside of the Analyst software the stop error is thrown and we get a blue screen. I have tried drivers from the followingni488220, ni488225, ni488227, and the aformentioned ni4882271.

I have tried switching PCI slots, I am uninstalling each previous driver and removing any registry entries prior to a new driver installation, and there is nothing in the event log related to the stop error. Is it possible that the card is old and needs to be replaced, it is well over 5 years old now? I have gone through all previous posts regarding BSOD and the PCI-GPIB card and nothing has helped. Any additional tips I could try would be very helpful and very much appreciated. One other note, this issue did not arise until we purchased the Dell about 6 months ago, our older Dell's did not show the same error.

Thanks for any and all help, and let me know if there is any other information I can add to help diagnose.

Scott

Hi Scott,

If possible I would try testing your "new computer" theory in two ways, first if you have access to another computer testing your card there could help us narrow the issue down to a hardware or a software issue. Second you could try updating the BIOS for your computer, a lot of computer specific issues can be solved in this way, you can search for your BIOS from here.

What OS are you currently running? Was it the same OS on the older computer?

Thanks

Thank you for the response Scott.

We are running XP Pro SP 3 on both of the machines. I will look into BIOS versions to make sure there is a new one available, thank you for the tip. I will reply again after I have had a chance to test this out.

Best regards,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Another way we can narrow in on blue screen issues is creating a memory dump of your crash, the following KnowledgeBase article explains how you can do this:

How Can I Create a Kernel Memory Dump When Windows Crashes?

You can post your DMP file here and we would be happy to have a look at it to see if/how the 488.2 driver is involved.

Thanks

Hello Scott,

Scott M is correct.  At this point we don't even know that the NI-488.2 driver is the cause of the blue screen.  To know for sure, we will need the memory dump that the knowledgebase talks about.  When will you be able to get us one of these?

We do quite a bit of our testing with different models of Dell computers and have seen no issues with the released drivers.  More than likely the memory dump will be too big to attach to the forums.  In that case, you can place it on our ftp site (ftp.ni.com/incoming) and we can get it from there.

Let us know if you can get this for us.

Hi Steven,

Thank you for keeping this thread active. I am unfortunately waiting for the system to be used again so I can retrieve the memory dump, we have a few people out for the holiday and there is very little activity at the moment. If I failed to mention it in earlier postings, the BSOD only occurs after a batch of samples has been processed, and then only when hardware profile deactivation occurs. I will get the file uploaded as soon as possible.

Many thanks,

Scott

Hi Steven and Scott,

I have finally managed to get a memory dump of the computer. I have uploaded the file to the ftp site titled MEMDMPSE. Sorry for the long delay in getting this uploaded, today was the first day that we were able to replicate the blue screen. Hopefully this helps, let me know if there is anything else I can provide that may assist in figuring this all out.

Many thanks,

Scott

Hello Scott,

We took a look at the memory dump file. The NI-488.2 driver was not responsible for the blue screen.  I'm guessing that the software suite that you are using is responsible for it.

From the dump file, we saw that the driver "digiclsb" appeared to be the cause of the crash.  You will probably find a corresponding digiclsb.sys file on your driver folder (C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers).  Looking at the properties of this file will let you know who to contact about this problem.

I hope this leads you in a direction that will get this problem fixed.

Hi Steven,

Thank you for taking the time to look at the dump file and figure out that it is not the GPIB driver causing the problem. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Best regards,

Scott

That may be a driver for a Digi Neo PCI serial port adapter card.
