Problem on NI-ENET to RS-232/2 with WT230 YG-Power meter

Dear All

I'm developing Labview7.1 application to use together with WT230 Yokogawa Power meter.
My program work well with my setup follow.

PC (RS-232 Port at COM 1 ) ---> DB9 to DB25(1m) ----> WT230 serial communication port (DB25)    [***** work fine*****]

But with the same set of hardware above. I connected NI-ENET to RS-232/(2-port)  between my PC and WT230 to extended the distance between my PC and WT230 via LAN as follow

LAN card --> ENET to RS-232/2 (COM10,COM11) --->  @COM10 ==> DB9 to DB25(1m) -----> WT230

As the setup above,  my program not work and I can't send any command to WT230 as this setup.
My ENET Diagnostic report that all port PASSED the test by its utility program.

I can OPEN comport by open session in MAX.
I can WRITE *IDN?\n to COM10  but I can't recived any return data but It can work well If I use COM1 without ENET to RS-232/2.

Any one have Idea to solved my problem?    What I missing or I did something wrong ?

Thanks in advance for all comment..

Regards

Hi COM9,
Are you connecting the device using a cross over cable?  Click here for more information on crossover cables if needed.  Let me know if this helps or not.

Hi Chris_R.

Thanks for your reply,   I have to connected the NI ENET to RS-232 via the ethernet switch. The NI-ENET device is already configed and pass the diagnostic test program. All port has assigned to COM10 and COM11 (not conflict) and its can found in windows devices manager and I can see NI port on MAX 3.1   So, I think the cross ethernet cable is not the problem.

I have been try to connect with other hard ware by using a USB to RS-232 Converter as follow

PC---> USB PORT ---> USB-to-RS232 Converter ---> DB9-to DB25 (1m ; same cable as I mentioned) ----> WT230

port setting at device manager and MAX is the same   9600 8 N 1  and my WT also  9600 8 N 1

** as this configuration above my program work fine on this converter same as I connect directly  to COM1.  I'm try to send ONLY  *IDN?\n command for test communication path from MAX to the device and it work fine also.**

But I need to use the NI ENET 232/2 to connect WT230 in the system because the distance from PC controller to WT230 installed location is too far.

I have two units of ENET 232/2 which use on other device, I try replace the unit but it can't communicate.

Do I need to add prefix charactor in my command line for used with NI-ENET Hardware before send the command to Device ?

Please advice ,

Best regards ,

COM9

Hi COM9,

Have you tried a loopback test on your system?  Disconnect the instrument and do a loopback test on the other side of the DB9-->DB25 converter.  This will determine if the commands and responses are making it through the ENET device successfully.  If needed, a document that discusses this is available by clicking here

Also, you may want to do an NI-Spy capture to see if the proper commands and responses are being transmitted.  If needed, click here for a document that explains how to do this.  You can look at the spy capture lines where the program is writing and reading using any VISA commands.  If a command or response is going through the VISA layer to the drivers, it will be logged into this file.  Please check this out.  If you need any help, just post the .spy file and I will take a look at it.  Let me know if you have any questions!

Best of luck!

Hi Chris

NI port are passed a loopback test on hyperterminal. I will try to use NI Spy to see what happen on my port also.

Thaks for your support information.
Have a nice day

I'm running 3 of the Yokogawa WT320's in my lab right now.  This should work with no problems.

The only thing you changed is your port.  It sounds like you have a handshaking issue.  Make sure you are setting all the RS232 communication parameters in your vi to match what you programmed the meter for.

Hi

One of my application calls for measuring voltage of all the 3Phase (Phase to Phase and Phase to Neutral), Current and Power measurement of Individual phase. Is it possible to measure these with Single WT230 (Yokogawa Power Analyzer).  Please let me know if anyone is having any inputs.

Thanks and regards

A single WT230 power meter with the 3 elements installed wired for 3-Phase 4-Wire (3P4W) configuration would be able to measure Phase to Neutral, Current and Power for each phase.  The Phase to Phase would need to be calculated in your application.  Suggest you download the manual for the WT230 from Yokogawa's website and talk to a Yokogawa application engineer.

Hi Wayne.C

Thanks for your reply,

I found with technical adviser that my requirement with single Wattmeter cannot be met unless I change the wiring method which is practically not advisable during production test. Hence I am looking for other options.
