Problem with Mac Powerbook and NI PCMCIA GPIB card

I am trying to get an NI PCMCIA-GPIB card to work in my Macintosh PowerBook 5300c laptop computer. I'm using OS 8.5.1 and NI-488.2 version 7.6.6 software. I can't get the NI-488.2 driver to communicate with the card without crashing the OS.
Has anyone had a similar experience and fixed the problem?
