Why is "Device and Interface" missing from MAX Config tree?

Solved!
Go to solution
I'm trying to integrate a LeCroy WS64MXs scope with LabView, but no luck so far.  In the Measurement and Automation explorer program, there is no leaf named "Devices and Interfaces" in the configuration tree.  All I have is "My system->Software" and "Remote systems."  Max version 4.5.0f0.  Should that leaf be there by default, and if not, how do I get it added to the tree?

What drivers did you install and what kind of hardware are you using to connect to the scope?

Thanks for the speedy reply.

I have run the NI VISA driver installer (v 4.5) and the LeCroy VICPPassportInstaller.  The Plug'n'Play drivers for the scope have been unzipped and placed in the Labview folder "...\instr.lib\lcwave" from

Serial communications through LabView work just fine.  I know that there's a simple fix, but we've spent close to two hours looking for what I am sure is right under our noses.

We are using a direct ethernet connection from PC to scope with a crossover cable.  The web-server on the scope displays just fine in the control PCs browser window.

I'm not sure that Devices and Interfaces would show without any drivers but it should with NI-VISA installed. Is NI-vISA listed under software? What is VICPPassportInstaller?

NI-VISA is listed under software, but only version and description information shows up in the right-hand pane.  The VCIPPassport is "The LeCroy VICP Passport is a plug-in passport driver for National Intruments' VISA driver (Windows version only)," according to

http://www.lecroy.com/tm/library/software/home.asp?menuid=8

I also just installed the IVI driver just above that, but no chane in MAX.

Hello swint,

Alan from LeCroy Tech Support here... I wish I could actually answer your question as to why "Devices and Interfaces" does not show up, but I can assure you that added LeCroy components such as the IVI driver or the VICP Passport will not affect what is showing up in MAX.    You might want to re-install MAX, or get the latest version.... What is the version of MAX that you are using?

Best Regards,

Alan

Hi, Alan-  Max v.4.5.0f0.  I can talk to the scope through the LeCroy ScopeExplorer, so I'm fairly sure that LeCroy's not to blame. 😉  I'm just about to the point of re-installing MAX, but I tried installing the demo version of LabView on a couple of other computers and it's the same story there.  From what I can tell, if MAX doesn't know about the device you're trying to integrate, there's not much hope of getting LabVIEW to talk to the scope.  'Though I haven't tried the example VI in a bit...

I think a repair or reinstall might be in order as well.

p.s. Before you install an IVI driver, I believe you have to install the IVI Compliance Package.

Hi swint,

If you are using LabVIEW, you will most likely want to use the LabVIEW driver for the scope rather than the IVI driver.  It's the "lcwave" driver on NI's website.  There are 2 versions of this driver, one of which is for 8.x and higher, which is a project-style driver, and one that is an "old style" driver.  (The code in the two drivers is the same.)

Best regards,

Alan
