gpib missing in max

I'm having some trouble communicating with my PCI-GPIB card.  I am running an old computer (Windows 2000) and I was trying to test a newer (2005 but still unopened) PCI-GPIB card that was not working in my new computer.  My old computer saw the new GPIB card but could not find any of the instruments on the bus.  I figured I would try updating the driver since the driver was really old (version 1.60).  I uninstalled this driver, tried installing the 2.73 driver (didn't work, though it did update MAX to the newest version).  I fiddled with this for a while with no luck and ended up installing the oldest driver still available (2.20), but with this driver windows didn't even recognize the old GPIB card (the new card has been removed at this point).  So I installed a slightly newer driver (2.42) to see if this would solve any problems.  Windows now can see the card in the device manager and says everything is working, and the NI "add GPIB wizard" says the card has passed all its tests.  The only problem I'm having is that MAX still doesn't list the GPIB card under devices and interfaces.  Anyone have any ideas what I need to reinstall/update to get this to work?  Thanks,

John

Hello John,

Thank you for using NI forums.  So what OS is on your new computer?  Also, when you are mentioning the uninstall and reinstall of these different GPIB drivers are you still referring to your Windows 2000 machine or the newer one?  Finally, what version of NI-VISA do you have on your computer?

Thanks for replying!  The new computer is running Windows 7, and since I posted on here I got it up and running.  The uninstalling/reinstalling I did with the drivers was on the windows 2000 machine.  I'm having some more problems with MAX on the W2K machine now, though.  I tried replacing NI Spy with an older version because it was the newest version (got installed when I tried the 488.2 version 2.7.3) and my GPIB driver was older (I thought this might be causing some conflict).  In order to do this, though, windows required me to uninstall the drivers for DAQ, IMAQ, VISA, MAX, and GPIB.  I found all the downloads and reinstalled everything, but now MAX won't open so I'm at a bit of a loss.  Here are the versions of everything I'm using:

 NI IVI Engine 1.83

 NI FlexMotion 5.2

Labview 6.1 with runtimes for 7.0 and 8.2.1

 Labwindows/CVI runtime engine 9.0

 MAX 3.1.1

 NI PXI Platform services 2.5.2

NI System API  RT

 NI 488.2 2.40

 NI-DAQ 6.9.2

NI-VISA  3.2f1

NI-VISA Runtime 4.6

NI-VISA Server 3.2f1

Any ideas on what might be conflicting or is there anything I'm missing?  Thanks,

John

Hi John,

One thing you may want to look into is upgrading your DAQ driver, as this will cause MAX to be updated as well.  Also, what error are you receiving when you try to open MAX?

I upgraded to MAX 4.2.1 (the newst one that supports Labview 6.1) but am still getting the same error: "NIMAX.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows.  An error log is being created."  The only difference is now it actually gets to the MAX GUI before the error pops up (I was really starting to get my hopes up this time 🙂 Any other ideas?  Thanks for your help,

John
