Even in 2025, this KB is still confusing on how to use NI-USB devices in Linux.

The KB is not providing instructions on using NI USB-232 interfaces in Linux. There are still no drivers for this. NI provides Linux drivers for the 843x product line (PCI, PCIe, PXI, and PXIe), but not for the USB-232 and USB-485 product lines.

The KB is describing how to use third-party instruments. For serial this is through any serial interface supported on Linux, which could be an 843x-series device or a third-party serial port. I don't see anything in that KB which implies they are for an NI USB-232 interface.

I see that NI does not provide Linux drivers for their USB-485, all I saying is that it is confusing to discern this. Heck, the "Install Instrument" links from this Linux KB redirect to a Windows KBs.
