Hi Tes,
Does the serial port show up in Device Manager or in MAX? Is the serial port a built-in port or a PCI serial card? Do you have NI Serial installed? As for the loopback test, have you tried a different cable? I think more information would be helpful to troubleshoot. When you say that the examples aren't working, are you receiving errors, or just no data?
Thanks!

Hi Adam, thanks for the reply.
I used to use it and it was working fine. To tell you what happened, I tried to send a command to SPEX monochromator and after that when i try to work with the SR830 LIA (which used to work, still works with other PC), it started prompting error "timeout expired before operation completed(BFF0015)"
For your questions :
-It shows up in MAX and Device manager
-It is built in( DELL Pentium4 desktop)
-the cable I am using is working.
Please reply me as soon as you can
regards
tes

Hi tes,
Make sure you are using the correct commands for the SR830. Sometimes a timeout indicates that a termination character such as a carriage return(CR) or line feed(LF) is required. Perhaps when you switched back from the other instrument you are still using the commands for the SPEX.
Also check to make sure that your port settings in MAX match the ones in device manager.
Hope this helps!

If you perform a loopback test with a VISA test panel in MAX, what happens? What version of VISA are you using? If its not the latest, try upgrading. I am not sure what is going on with your port but if you can't get a loopback test to work in either MAX or hyperterminal, perhaps the port was damaged somehow. If you can get a loopback to work, try another instrument and see if you can get the port working with something.
