measurement computing gpib and error logs

We are using a measurement computing gpib with some third party software that was programmed for an NI gpib (I told them we had a different brand, and they didn't say it was a problem!).  It works alright, but we get a generic "gpib communication error" on occasion, and I need to figure out if there is someway in NI VISA to track the error.  Any ideas? (I can see the gpib in NI VISA, but not in NI SPY).

So, are asking for help with a non-NI product?

Shouldn't be asking the manufacturer of the product you do have?

I have, and am awaiting thier reply.  Also, since it does use NI VISA, I thought someone here might have an idea that I could try.  Is it wrong to try more than one avenue?

The strange thing is that NI Spy does not see it

Turns out that's because I have NI I/O Trace instead.  Trace does see the GPIB, and I get a time out error when I use the VISA interactive control to read from the instrument. (not when writing, or querying). I don't get any errors in Trace when i run the software, but the instrument throws up a generic GPIB read error.  I am working under the assumption they are the same read error.
