Automatically Set Input Terminal to Required using Ctrl button when Wiring Connector Pane

Status: Declined

While I acknowledge the need to configure the connection faster, the proposed use of the Ctrl key would be confusing because of the "switcheroo" behavior.

Instead of the two step process of wiring an input on the Connector Pane and then changing the terminal setting to Required through the right-click menu, holding down the Ctrl key while wiring the input will automatically set the terminal to Required.

I know there's a LabVIEW option to set all terminals to Required as default, but I usually use a mix of Required, Recommended and Optional.

Ctrl is used for the Swicheroo, allowing you to swap terminal positions on the Connector Pane.

Just chiming in with a clarification:

Switcheroo works when clicking on a connector on the pane, with another one selected previously.

The way I understood this idea is to set the connector required when control key is pushed down when selecting the front panel control to be wired.

It might be slightly confusing at first, but I don't think that the two functionalities would be conflicting.

On the other hand, I too have the option activated to create the inputs as required by default. So this idea might be a bit more generic if the control would change the input to the other option by the use of the Ctrl key, i.e. if required is the default it would become recommended, if recommended is the default then it would be wired as required.

Whether it's Ctrl or something else (like Shift), the core idea here is to shortcut the current two-step process. For me, I find myself dealing with a lot of individual terminals on a lot of individual VI's and it starts taking a lot of time.

I had never used Switcheroo, though I was aware of it, so it didn't come to mind when I wrote the idea.

I like the thought that it will change whatever the default setting is (if default is set to required it will become recommended, if default is set to recommended it will become required)

@Christina_R,

Instead of just declining, how about editing the title to something like "shortcut to make the connection type option faster" and then letting the masses debate on the key combination. As you stated, the implementation of the core idea is the problem.

@crossrulz, I'd rather see a new Idea submitted. I don't think it's just a matter of picking a different shortcut key. Based on the description of the problem (i.e., often needing a mix of terminal configurations), I would find a proposal more compelling if it provided general improvements to viewing and modifying the connector pane.

This thread finally took me to the point where I created the idea about a dedicated UI for the connector pane editing: Dedicated UI for LabVIEW connector pane - NI Community
