LabVIEW Opening Screen - more Projects listed

Status: Completed
Implemented in LabVIEW 2012 with the new Getting Started Window design

When LabVIEW first opens, you can select recent projects or files from a list.  Currently there are only 2 recent projects listed and several files.  Since LabVIEW has become very project oriented, which is good, more recent projects should be listed.  Also, the top one of the list should be the last one closed and not the last one opened as it is currently.

I like this small but useful suggestion.

If memory serves, the formatting of the GSW is controlled by an XML file, which you should be able to edit to accomplish at least the first part.

In LabVIEW 2009 and later, you can edit your INI file to put "MaxGSWRecentProjects=" followed by the number of projects you want on the Getting Started Window. The default is 2. What do you think we should change it to?

The ordering of the recent files is the same as the File menu. Do you think the rules of the ordering there are wrong, or are you asking for the GSW to be different than the File menu?

I think that the default for the recent projects should be say 6.  As to the ordering for the files, I rarely use the recent files, more often opening files from within the project.  For recent projects, I was suggesting that the most recent be the last one closed.  Often while working on a project, I will open other projects to for reference and ideas.  After opening a few other projects, my main project has been moved off the list.  Changing the recent projects list to 6 will help prevent this, but the main project will still move down the list.  Since my main project is usually the last one that I close at the end of the day, having it at the top of the list would be convenient.

Also, is there anywhere that the INI file options are documented?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you should have known about the INI token. It isn't published; I put it in when someone asked for this functionality earlier, but it hasn't made it to Tools>>Options yet.

The best documentation of LabVIEW INI tokens that I know of is on the LabVIEW WIKI (http://labviewwiki.org/LabVIEW_configuration_file.)

I'm actually not sure what the current rules for the recent files/projects are, but I don't think it's common (in other apps) for closing a document to move it to the top of the recent list. Looking forward to hearing more opinions here.

FYI: I've added a "Getting Started Window" category to the LabVIEW wiki so we can expose all of the ini settings: http://labviewwiki.org/LabVIEW_configuration_file  Please add any that you know of.
