Popup Help for Tools -> Options dialog settings

Status: Declined

Any idea that has received less than 3 kudos within 3 years after posting will be automatically declined.

To better understand the settings in the LabVIEW Options dialog, show popup help when hovering the mouse pointer over a setting.

As of LabVIEW 2012 the user has to open the help and look for the setting in question. Not an issue. Just an idea to help keep NI developers employed.  🙂

There is already something close to what you describe in the Context Help window.  If you open the Context Help window (ctrl-H) with the Tools-Options dialog open, it will show a brief description of each setting you move your mose over.  This behavior also exists in most of the other LabVIEW built-in dialogs.

Putting some lines of the description (in the context help) into the tip strip should not be a big work. Taking the first sentence of line number three would be a good start and could be automated.

(The tip strip is the yellow box poping up when the curser is over a control. It is a LabVIEW property of all controls and indicators.)

This is me speaking strictly as a user. If the LV community really wants these, we'll do them, but I wouldn't like it. The flickering of tip strips gives me a headache quite quickly. The CH sits over to one side of my monitor and doesn't overlap what I'm looking at. For me, it is a substantially better way to present information than stuff jumping in and out of existence all the time. If you move to a mode that doesn't cause headaches (which can be done by making them fade in slowly after a long enough delay of not moving the mouse) then no one knows the tip strips exist. It's their instant in-your-face nature that makes them discoverable, but that causes pain.

There are multiple extensions to VisualStudio that I cannot use because they keep trying to introduce popups as you type. I don't want that to happen to LV too.
