Remove optical illusions from NI Activation Wizard progress bar of mystery

Is it just me, or does the "progress bar" (that actually doesn't show a % progress -- it's a mystery) create optical illusions (and especially when it's animated)?  It kind of makes me dizzy to look at.

Is that bar getting wider to the right, or is it an illusion...? 😉

Its just an activity bar, because the total time it will take is probably not known until it completes. I agree it could be made a bit more pleasing to look at. 😉

I kind of like it... I zone out on the weird image and the time seems to pass more quickly.  Smiley Wink

Once again xkcd sums it up perfectly:

Estimation

Isn't the standard approach for an unknown wait to fill half the remaining bar every second?  That first gives the impression "It won't take long", then "It's nearly finished", before the user has a chance to think "I've been sitting here for 3 hours now".

GregS: No, the recommendation these days is that if you don't know, don't make any claims one way or the other (i.e. by giving an "i'm still alive" bar that doesn't show progress) and provide a cancel button if possible. Sometimes that's not possible or not recommended (as is often the case with installers where backing out the change could take as long or longer as finishing the change), but that's the goal.

I had meant that last comment sarcastically - just forgot to add the smiley-face Smiley Wink  Sorry it wasn't obvious -- it's that kiwi humour...

They should go further with the illusion aspect and add a ever-rising Shepard tone.  It'll finish any second now!

Well, you ARE installing the Vision Development Module...

If you ask me, Don't install! It's a trap!
