Space constant redesign

Status: Completed

Implemented in LabVIEW 2014

Currently, the space constant looks very similar to an underline character, possibly causing confusion.

I think the icon could be made a bit more distinctive. Here are some alternatives I just made up. I would probably prefer (1) but I am open to any other suggestions. 😄

\s  but, maybe a "\" display style in the left boarderSmiley Wink  That sideways bracket doesn't look "Spacey" to me.  Maybe a couple of georgian commas and a thorn?

I have to agree with Darin

"My suggestion: Get rid of that sucker (sort of).  That is just a VI masquarading as a constant.  If I can not put it into an array constant then stop calling it a constant!"

I like options 1 & 3. Kudos!

However, if this gets implemented, then make it available for array constants!  Otherwise, it is not a constant!

I like this idea.

Actually, number 2 and 3 are my favorites.

Nice job.

My suggestion for the new space constant image: string space constant.png

@Manzoli,

that's normally reserved for non-printable characters.... of which there are quite a few.

I vote for option 1 as well

Good point, I didn’t remembered when I proposed. Since it's a LabVIEW constant, I believe that the space constant will be the first that will come to mind, not a non-printable char.

I have to disagree.  Have you looked at nonprintable characters in a string control/indicator?  You get that box.  The very first thing I thought when I saw your glyph was a non-printable constant.  To be more specific, 0x00 (ie NULL).

@Manzoli,

I see no precedent to believe that the glyph you have shown should be interpreted as a space constant.  Sorry.  It's the glyph for one of many non-printable characters as already pointed out.
