User Colors. 18 is not enough!

Status: New

Capture.PNG

User Colors 1-16 are now pre-defined by the default LabVIEW.ini file  that leaves us developers with only two.  Why 18 total?  This needs some adjustments IMHO!  It should be easy to implement but, can't be done without hacking the ini editor

I don't understand. The default names are just that, names. The corresponding colors are NOT used for anything. For instance, change the "Thermometer Fill" color to pink, drop a thermometer control on a FP, and its fill color will still be red. Sme of the other colors. you CANNOT change the Refnum Wire color to pink...

So delete all those names and you'll have 18 colors that you can name whatever you want and change to whatever you please, without affecting anything else in LV. Plenty enough for whatever I can think of myself...

I like the 16 defined names I want more than two of my ownSmiley Frustrated

And Yes, I agree refnum wire colors don't change...... Hmmmmm... Coersion Dot colors used to be on the list. Smiley Surprised 18 is a totally bogus number to limit User Colors too.

It's 2 more than MSPaint gives you, which I think is a fair comparision application. LV does not provide a full swatches system like Photoshop, but LV isn't a graphics editing application. It's a graphical app that provides some useful tooling for manipulating simple graphics.

What makes 18 bogus? The fact that it isn't a power of 2 or 10?

18 is "bogus" because fewer and fewer of them are "User Defined"  MSPaint lets me define even less- And lets be honest- Paint does not offer to be a Graphical Development Enviornment.

I feel 18 is too few because I want more than 2 for my own development.  Fair enough?

In Essence, I want more! not less than I had years ago in the same IDE while adding more than "MSPaint" offers-

Spoiler
you cannot program an app in "Paint"   why would you claim it is a equitable example app?  Really!!!!!

MS Paint is an app for full graphics development. We are merely graphical development. Our use case is a substantial subset of theirs for image manipulation.

 Stephen, I can accept that.

But, 18 is not enough.  They are "User Colors" not NI Predefined Colors.

Some others that would be nice to have would be "Buffer Allocations" (Whoa brainstorm- an Easter-egg ini entry to make BA's look like NigelSmiley Very Happy) "Icon Banner Backround A,B,C...", FP BG color, .... the list could be expanded.

NI has used up the "User Colors" to the point where they are removing historical options for User Defined Colors and giving the users fewer choices to simplify development efforts.   I do not think that this is a good move-  You are running up to the 18 color limit yourselves and I want more!

And, while i'm at it --- lets look at the "Other 8"

Capture.PNG

Coersion Dots is the odd color out here.

The other seven apply new vis.  Backround colors, Menu colors , Scrollbar? (Why is that even here? we can custopmize controls with a Strict Type Def) and Blink colors should be settable by hitting Ctrl+I or, by using public VI properties!

Maybe another of those internal discussions is in order.
