auto-move context sensitive help

Status: New

I would like to see the context sensitive help window intelligently move out of the way of wiring. It frequenty jumps to the place where I need to run a wire. My idea would be that if the mouse cursor reached the edge of the help window it would jump to a remote place on the diagram, and if you happened to wire to that remote place, it would keep on jumping out of the way.

I definitely understand the frustration. However, the solution you propose could be equally as annoying for other use cases, especially users who are comfortable with the current arrangement.

What about adjustable transparency for the CH window?

I don't like the constant resizing I have to do to it. Also, I would like the default position to be an option. It gets in the way in the upper right corner of the screen. It would work better for me if it were in the lower left corner.

Hi garrettmarsh

It doesn't have to be on all the time. The user could choose whether they need this feature enabled. The window could have a tiny button near its title bar. When the button is pressed this intelligent behavior should kick in. Each window should have its own setting.

I think this is a brilliant idea. In fact I posted the same thing for the "probe watch" window before I saw this idea here.

I think it would be extremely useful if NI developed this functionality in all sort of windows which are part of the LabVIEW development system, and allowed the user to enable/disable this feature as desired. Especially when you have to work with lower resolution monitors with very limited size, the fact that such floating windows do not move out of the way is very, very frustrating, and having to constantly move them around or minimise/maximise them is time consuming.

I want tho bump this idea back into active discussion/voting. I can hardly believe that garrettmarsh's idea to >> What about adjustable transparency for the CH window? ... didn't receive any attention at all. I would think that this method should satisfy everyone! If the Context Help window (also Probe Watch, Breakpoint Manager, etc.) were to become transparent anytime your cursor touches it, OR anytime the currently selected node is behind it, then this should solve the problem once and for all these windows getting in the way of a wiring target, while not causing visual distraction by jumping the window around. Additionally it should make moot the other issues about constant resizing and/or default window position and/or having to temporarily turn the window off, because these would no longer matter once the window becomes transparent. Kudos to garrettmarsh!
