drag vi, llb, ctl, lvproj... on getting started window

Hi,

I have several Labview versions, and some files are in 2010, others in 2011.

I often work with both version launched, and when I want to open a file, I have to do File=>Open and choose the file (with the good Labview version). Opening a 2010 file with both version 2010 and 2011 launched open my file with 2011, whereas it has been saved in 2010... (maybe a bug ?)

I would appreciate if I could drag and drop the file I want to open on the LV icon on taskbar (+1000 to the following idea : here)

Best regards,

V-F

Which are you asking for?  Drag and rop onto the Getting Started Window or grad and drop onto the taskbar?

Not a bug. VIs launched from the OS go to whichever version of LabVIEW you have most recently opened, so if you launched LV 2011 second, all VIs will go there. If you launched LV2010 second, all VIs will go there (and some will report that they cannot be opened because they were last saved in LV 2011).

It is actually working as intended and therefore is not a bug, although it may not be the behavior that you (or other users on the idea exchange) wish it was.

@Mr. Mike : Both solutions  ! Drag and drop onto the getting started window and on taskbar !

@Aristos Queue : The best behaviour would be to open in the saved version, not with the last version opened...

May I recommend the LabVIEW Shell Launcher.  It has saved me tons of headaches from this.

I've heard good arguments on all possible sides of this debate. I don't think you can claim there's a "best behavior" on this topic. There may very well be a "best behavior for me".   🙂

If a debate with good arguments on all sides does not call for a configurable option, then what does really? I would think the parameters of the debate have shifted significantly with the yearly release schedule and new OS features like jump lists and the like. It is getting annoying to go to the Start Menu, choose a file from the shortcut menu next to a given LV version and have the file open in a different version. Or, download a VI, choose a program to open it from the pulldown list and have the choice ignored. The current behavior is out of the norm, at least with Windows, so to me that elevates the bar. I hope there is a really really good argument for it. I would personally be slightly less annoyed if I knew a lot of people were dropping to their knees and giving thanks for the current behavior.

I really think this is a good Idea. Please enable drag and drop for the getting started window. This is intutive and is similar to many other programs in Windows. It is good that Labview opens the vi with the latest opened version of LV so that we can switch versions easily, but drag and drop would be easier and intutive.
