Yes you must use LINX ,LIFA was not longer supported, check in here

There are tutorials available for how to install and set up LINX. One is a
video for the Sparkfun kit but the procedure is essentially the same.

Hey,
LIFA has been replaced with LINX. LINX provides all of the same features as LIFA and many more. One of the major improvments that LINX makes is that you no longer need to build the firmware from source code so you won't get errors like your post above.
