3d picture control

Hi:

I have not had too much time to investigate the improved 3d picture control yet.

I have several reasons to want to use it including to replaced the ActiveX-based 3d graph at some point in my applications to display 3d surfaces.

But today, I am interested in rendering a series of .bmp images to create a 3d volume, potentially with some transparency, such as one might be able to do with programs such as 3d Doctor. (Speaking of which, has anyone ever tried to interface LabVIEW with 3d Doctor and does 3d Doctor expose its properties and methods via ActiveX server?). Another interest is to render the images one above the other in a 3d-like view.

Any quick start help to accomplish this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Don

Hi Don,

Have you seen this message thread.  In it, Ben talked about some really cool stuff he did to graphically manipulate jpeg images to give them a 3-D quality for his model railroad.  It sounds similar to what you are trying to do.

Ravens Fan*,

Thanks for plugging my railraod but I think Don was asking about the 3-d Picture control which became a real feature in ablout LV 8.0.

Don,

I did that in the public Beta version of that add-on.

Unfortunately it looks like that was one of the projects I lost in a disk crash.

In my version I resorted to defining my own objects which were cubes but had vertexes at each pixel location. That let me define the color at each vertex by mapping the pixel colors of the jpg to the appropriate vertex.

I lost interest because in the Beta version this meant I lost all lighting effects plus the size of the 3d picture was to small to meet my needs.

Before you resort to that route, it looks likes "skins" may be helpful in the current version.

Hey now, you've got a full game advantage.  I'll be looking forward to that game.  I'll actually be on vacation in Disneyworld with my family, so I'm hoping we will get back to the hotel early enough to catch it.

His description reminded me of how you were modifiy pictures to simulate 3-D terrain.  I didn't remember all the details of how you did it, but I thought it might have been a picture control.

As a rabid  Browns fan, we are gaining on you both.

I have to take the time to look at the latest 3d picture control examples (which I thought were supposed to be posted on NI.com/labs but I don't see them).  I have had no time recently and was hoping for a jump start, even maybe from Jonathan Meyer who gave a great presentation at NIWeek

Hi Don,

I think skins is what you are after.

So I have Ravens Fan to my left, a Brown Fan to my right and a Broncos fan at the far end of my cubicle farm.

We tried to convert him (see below) but it did not work and the Broncos beat us any way.

After checking with my wife, I have to answer

"YES!"

I have learned not to argue with her about bears and the like. I used to try, but eventually learned that sooner or latter she would invoke the four letter word "cute" and the discusion was over.
