About temperature measurements using k type thermocouple

Solved!
Go to solution

Hello Labview Team,

I would like to measure the two temperature measurements using k-type thermocouple.

From national instruments, I have found myrio, mydaq devises which are portable and cheaper than the other hardware devices and I would need a portable device. I would like to know am I capable to measure temperature using mydaq and myrio or should I have to buy NI usb 6009 device.

i have also found third party sellers which is from Labjack and is it better than NI hardware but I found it is cheaper and is it also possible to do the Labview programming conveniently, I mean is there any problems?

thank you ☺️

The 6009 will not do thermocouple readings. NI does sell some other TC cards and USB adapters specifically for TCs. I've used LabJack before and the T7 can do TC reading with some setup and the U3 can as well, but requires a CJC module you have to buy separately.

Edit. I do not believe the myDaq or myRio will do thermocouples either, but not 100% sure of that.

Thank you for your reply. Did you have any problems with Labjack U3 and T7.

I have seen that I need a special adapter which costs 70$ for the Labjack U3 unit, Labjack U3 which is very cost-effective but it needs external adapters. which is LJTick-InAmp.

I would like to use the LabVIEW programme for the Labjack device, did you had any problems?

I have seen that there are thermocouple adapters (NI-USB TC 01) from NI which allows only one channel but I do need two channels at the same time for my measurements.

To get accurate thermocouple measurements you need to use a DAQ that has Cold Junction Compensation.

Hi
You mean compac daq?

You can use LabVIEW for both the U3 and T7. T7 is much easier to work with for TCs. I may have been mistaken when I said the U3 needs a CJC module, I think it is just the LJ-Tick-InAmp, but since there is no CJC correction, you have to correct the reading by manually getting a temperature reading.

Hi Steven,

The Ni team told me that USB 6009 can do the temperature measurements, When I had a look at this webpage https://knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails?id=kA00Z000000P7qKSAS&l=de-DE&opendocument=

They mentioned that it can do the measurements but due to its low resolution it temperature measurement limits are low. For me, the temperature measurements can go higher than the limits they set to.

May I know which is the best solution for my temperature measurements, I am looking for a device that can capable of 5 channels and support measuring different functionalities?

Thank you.!

NI sells Compact DAQ modules for thermocouples, but most only handle 4 channels. They also sell single channel USB dongles for around $100. There are certainly other solutions, just depends on your requirements.

If you get a 1 Slot USB CompactDAQ chassis (cDAQ-9171) you can select a module that best suits your needs.

NI-9210 4 Channel TC 14 S/s

NI-9212 8 Channel TC 95 S/s/c

NI-9213 16 Channel TC 75 S/s

Saludos.

What's your budget?

My company has been using the HP/Agilent/Keysite 3479xA for 20+ years for the vast majority of our measurements.

The 3497xA has been replaced with the Keysite DAQ973 using the DAQM901A multiplex module you can measure Temperatures using thermocouples (built in cold junction compensation for the most popular TC types), or Thermistors. You can measure AC or DC voltages to +/- 300 volts, resistance, and two dedicated current measurement channels. All the inputs are differential meaning they are isolated from each other. A MUX card has 20 input channels and the mainframe can hold 3 modules

There are several deferent modules available and it has excellent LabVIEW support.

These have been the workhorse in our lab for a very long time and unless you need a high speed DAQ, it's hard to beat these when it comes to price per channel for just about any measurement.
