Accessing files from SharePoint Online

Solved!
Go to solution

Has anyone tried to access files from SharePoint Online (the newest version)?

I have a scenario where I have an Excel template (XLST) that automatically opens, asks the user what they want to name the file, then saves it elsewhere. Since we have migrated the files over from our company's file server to SharePoint Online, I now cannot open the Excel Workbook directly.

While I can sync the files to my company's login, I have assumed that some won't but will have access to the SharePoint Online file repository (via a MS Teams Channel). Using the Secure HTTP file path has led to frustration. Also, the SSL@DavWWWRoot solution for previous versions of SharePoint don't seem to work, either.

Has anyone successfully opened a file via the latest version of SharePoint Online?

Since I have a solution, I figured I'd better share it.

Since we're using a cloud-based version of SharePoint, I can't use the On-Premises solution. Instead, I needed to Add a Shortcut to OneDrive via the SharePoint folder (or it's directory) and access the file(s) via the Windows File Explorer.

Since we're heavily integrated in Microsoft, the same can be done via MS Teams - Files tab to get the same shortcut feature.
