So I checked the configuration in MAX and the device was configured for a SCB-68 or something so I changed it to the BNC-2110 and tried everything again with no luck. I restarted the computer, and still the same thing. I'm not quite sure why it was working with the other divice selected, but in any case the same behavior seems to be plaguing the system regardless. I am going ahead with the work around and unless I stumble upon something else that sheds more light on this phenomenon I'll just have to be content with what I've got I suppose.
I did notice that the device has not been calibrated since 2004 so that's probably something I should do. Also, the self-calibration failed when I tried that, but it resets fine and passes the self-check.
