Can I run two separate versions of the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine on one PC?

Hello, I am curious if anyone knew if it is possibly to install and use two separate versions of the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine on one PC?  I currently have the 2009 Run-Time Engine installed on one machine and wanted to install the 2011 Run-Time Engine as well. I know that you can run two separate versions of the LabVIEW program on one machine, but what about the Run-Time Engine?

No problem at all. I currently have the run-time engines for 8.2, 8.6, 2009, 2010 and 2011 all on my computer. Multiples are no problem at all. Go ahead and load them.

Yes.  I currently have 2009 and 2010 on one machine.  You probably have two different versions installed on your development computer, don't you?

Like the others said, RTEs are no problem, but if you have NI drivers (such as the DAQmx API), be aware that you can't have more than one version of each driver installed at any point in time and that the different RTEs might not support the same versions of the driver (for instance, if the driver version is old and no longer supported in the new RTE).

Hmm i tried instal the RTE 7.1 (on computer are labview 2010 ad labview 2011) but it stopped with message : a higher version of this product is already instaled. So i have to instal completly LabView 7?

The run time engine 7.1 has nothing to do with LabVIEW 7. Version 7 and 7.1 are not the same.

What is your OS? It is possible that 7.1 is too old. (it is not even listed here)

Could it be that you already have a newer patch version of the LabVIEW 7.1 runtime (or full labview) installed? What is the exact error message you get?

Where did you get the 7.1 run time engine you are using?

OS is Win XP, no, there was only fresh instalation of Labview 2010 and labview 2011. RTE was from http://ftp.ni.com/support/softlib/labview/labview_runtime/7.1/Windows/English/LVRunTimeEng.exe and its version for XP. Now i tried instal full Labview 7.1 and it works. Maybe it will be the way how figure out my mainly problem with old VI´s http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/VI-from-LB-7-gt-LB-2011/m-p/2615909/highlight/true#M784220 🙂

Hi all!

I have the same problem as Pepec mentioned before.

I already installed LabVIEW 2012 (which probably the RTE is 2012), but I trying to install LabVIEW 8.6.

I could not install this old version. but I saw on the another discussion  that it says that RTE maybe is corrupt.

So, I downloaded RTE 8.6.1 from ni website. I couldn't install it because there's higher version already installed.

What should I do now? Uninstall LabVIEW 2012 and RTE 2012 and then install RTE 8.6.1 for LabVIEW 8.6?

What can you suggest guys?

I'm guessing this is a bug that NI needs to fix.  I see no reason you shouldn't be able to install the run-time engine of an older version.  I'd be interesed in if it allows you to install the older development environment, which also includes the older run-time engine.  There are some command line switches for NI installers as mentioned here:

The "higher version already installed" would be a more recent version of the 8.6/8.6.1 runtime itself.  Some newer versions of older runtimes are included with NI products, depending on the product. You should be able to check what versions are installed in the National Instruments\Shared\LabVIEW Run-Time directory.

Before attempting anything else, what error or problem did you have when installing LabVIEW 8.6?
