I created an XControl in LabVIEW 8.5 (and 8.2.1), and I did add custom icons to all the typedefs and VIs associated with it. However, when I drop it on the front panel, I get a generic-looking icon representation on the block diagram. However, when I create a simple typedef and drop that on the front panel, I get the typedef's icon framed in the datatype-specific border on the block diagram. Perhaps I missed something about how do edit that guy. It's a minor issue, but I'm curious.
Can't say why the icon issue, but the control itself is very cool. The only thing I noticed was that when first placed by dragging it to the front panel from Windows explorer, the data controls were only about 2 pixels high. Opening the control in the control editor let me resize it. The only other issue was that the backspace doesn't work.

Dan, It's nice to see you forge into XControls. I hope my NIWeek presentation this year was the key to get you motivated. In order to change the icon you need to edit the icon of the XControl library. Right-click the XControl in the project and select "Properties". Under the General settings go edit the icon.
Right click the XControl itself in the project and select Properties. There you'll see an icon that can edit, which will show up on the XControl on a block diagram.
Mike A., your presentation did motivate me to go for the XControl.
Mike P., yeah the wedding countdown is ticking away. 2/2/2008! Also, the thing doesn't go to 2 pixels for me. Perhaps I only tested dragging from explorer in LabVIEW 8.5. I'm compiling on FPGA right now, otherwise I'd test it out.
