try matlab they have a lot of nice tools for Video editing using the functions. The guys I work with use it to detect fires on ships they prefer it over everything else. It will take you two or three weeks to come up to speed with it but after that you will love it. I think I seen a lot of white papers on this you could search for that.
If you buy Matlab use the help files and then you can even integrate it with labview creating some really powerful applications that you use to see in science fiction movies.
