I remember my University days with LabVIEW as well, and there too it was common for people to run un-compiled code.. let alone now know about source (code) control.
I would strongly recommend that any running experiment use compiled code, at least then you can more readily keep zip files with different versions (as needed) and you are protected against casual users poking their fingers on stuff they should not touch. Its not that hard, and most campuses (??) probably have the license that lets them compile EXE's anyway?
Sorry for the side-bar on that.. just my 2 cents on that side-convo'.
