Create a type def using text entry

I have a type definition with a large number of variables. Rather than adding new variables to the type def graphically, I would like to be able to select the variable type (boolean, unit32, etc. ) and enter a variable name through text entry. Is this possible?

To clarify, it appears from your post that you would like to programmatically change the data type of the variables within your custom control/type def? Is this correct? How are the variables currently stored in your type def; an array, cluster? Could you post a screenshot of your current type def control?
