DAQ requirements

I have 7 sensors that their output is mv/Volt and I was said I need to have Ni 9237 module to connect the sensors. I also have a digimatic LVDT that I do not know what kind of module I need to provide for that. This is the LVDT link: http://ecatalog.mitutoyo.com/ABSOLUTE-Digimatic-Indicator-ID-C-Series-543-Standard-Type-C1198.aspx

I also have a kollmorgen servomotor that I was said I need to communicate b/w LabView and its programmable unit (AKD) through MODBUS.

All in all, I need to design a DAQ that can handle 7 sensors with mv/Volts output, 1 LVDT and also can control a servomotor through MODBUS. What kind of modules, Chassis, platform and other stuff I need to build a perfect DAQ?

Hi MajTal,

For everything you are trying to do, it might be worth looking into our CompactRIO platform.

http://www.ni.com/compactrio/

You can get the NI-9237 to communicate with your sensors, and use the built-in serial port for MODBUS communication to a Kollmorgen AKD.

I am not familiar with the output signal of the LVDT, but I believe there is a 3rd party module for the cRIO that is able to communicate with these types of sensors.

Please feel free to give us a call and talk to one of our technical sales representatives, who should be able to assist you further.

Thank you so much. I have got a quote from NI yesterday that is very similar to what you stated in your post. I attach it here and I would be grateful if you take a look at it and let me know your idea. It includes 2 NI9237, 1 Module for LVDT, 1 Module to drive servomotor, 1 module to drive stepper motor. ( Both motors come from kollmorgen). In case I used these modules for the motors do I still need to use MODBUS library or not? They told me these modules would be enough to communicate with the motors bu I do not know about the details.

Hi MajTal,

You can use either these modules or MODBUS to control the Kollmorgen drive. If you use the stepper/servo modules you can use the NI SoftMotion Module.

The SoftMotion Lite module is free of charge, and gives you the ability to program basic line and arc moves from the NI Scan Engine.

I want to control a linear actuator using labview module. This is a EC5 electrical cylinder provided by kollmorgen and its model is EC5-T41T-100-10B. It has a T41T stepper motor: http://www.kollmorgen.com/en-us/products/linear-actuators/electric-cylinders/ec5-series/

May I use NI 9501 module for that purpose?

Hi MajTal,

If you do not have an external motor drive (Kollmorgen recommends the P7000 series for that particular motor:http://www.kollmorgen.com/en-us/products/drives/stepper/p7000-series/) then the 9501 will be sufficient to drive the motors.

If you do have an external drive, then the 9512 module is what you should go with.

I have a question about an order we got from NI a couple of month ago. We have a NI 9512 to run a linear actuator and a NI 9514 to run a servomotor. For the stepper motor we have a stepnet driver (STX-230-07) which its manual is attached. For the servomotor we have an AKD from kollmorgen. To connect the modules to these drivers, we got two cables from NI. A NI 951x cable and terminal block bundle and also NI 9512 to AKD drive cable. I am a little confused because NI 9512 is not going to be connected to the AKD. As I said it will be connected to the Stepnet module.  In this case, I think we need to have NI 9514 to AKD cable and another cable to connec NI 9512 to the Stepnet driver. Please correct me if I am wrong.
