Hi, Everyone:
I have a colleague who is installing LabVIEW 2018 onto a computer, and the Device Loader service, which NI-MAX depends on, is not found. I don't mean it's turned off - it's not there. He had to run to a meeting, so I don't know the specifics. I think he has yet to install the driver discs, but I don't know enough about LV 2018 to rule out the possibility that NI-MAX no longer depends on this service and so it is no longer installed.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks!

No one even has an opinion on this?

Hi Bill,
I have an opinion, but I don't think it is any better than what you've already stated.
I believe the Device Loader (or is it Device Detector?) gets added as part of the Device Driver installation. You said you think he hadn't installed the Device Driver discs yet, so I certainly believe that would cause the problem. It wasn't clear from your message, but is MAX present on the system? I believe MAX also is installed as part of the Device Driver install. If one is present and not the other, it is possible that something might have been deselected out of the tree when if the Device Driver discs were installed.
I would check to make sure he ran the Device Driver discs, and even if he says he did, to try to install again anyway and double check the names of all the components it says it will install.

I have lots of opinions! And I do know about installing LabVIEW and having Services Appear and Disappear (which is why I'm currently unhappy with NIPM and LabVIEW 2019, but that's another, sad, story).
I recently had occasion to install LabVIEW 2016, 2017, and 2018 on a PC. When I installed 2016, the Device Loader service was running. Installed LabVIEW 2017, it was gotn. Installed LabVIEW 2018, it came back. At the time, I was installing one after the other, so I wasn't necessarily trying to use LabVIEW 2017 when I only had two versions of LabVIEW.
Another critical Service is the NI Service Locator -- if it is missing, you will not be able to access the LabVIEW Examples. It is all too easy to lose this Service ...
Something that sometimes helps is to repeat an Installation (which usually "goes quickly" because it doesn't do very much ...). See if that helps.

I haven't had a chance to touch base with him today because we were both preoccupied with our own little version of Hell.
I'll catch up with him on Monday, as we have every other Friday off and we're off on this one. Thanks for the info, guys!
